Looking for a home with a family: The Aldeas Infantiles supports foster care
Aldeas Infantiles SOS has been working since 1967 to ensure that children and adolescents (C&A) in vulnerable situations grow up in safe and nurturing family environments. In 2024, the organization supported nearly 30,000 children and adolescents and more than 4,700 families across eleven autonomous communities in Spain, developing programs focused on prevention, foster care, and alternative care.
Specifically, this symposium presents Aldeas Infantiles SOS’ experience in three key foster care modalities: non-kinship foster care, specialized foster care, and kinship foster care. Over the past year, Aldeas Infantiles SOS supported 512 children: 359 (70%) in kinship foster care, 136 (27%) in non-kinship foster care, and 17 (3%) in specialized foster care. Specialized foster care is proposed as an innovative resource for children and adolescents who, due to complex circumstances, require specialized support. Non-kinship foster care occurs when a child or adolescent temporarily lives with a family other than their own for protection and care reasons. Meanwhile, kinship foster care emerges as a modality that preserves identity, culture, and emotional bonds, promoting emotional continuity and family rootedness. In all cases, the role of Aldeas Infantiles SOS focuses on professional support for foster families and families of origin, ensuring careful, participatory processes oriented toward the best interests of the child.
