Beyond the looking glass of adversity: strength and resilience of vulnerable populations

While traditional approaches center on risk factors that hinder the development of vulnerable youth, a scientific shift must occur to better identify factors that promote youth adaptation despite adversity. Indeed, given the rapid changing environments young people are confronted with, greater insights into protective factors and strengths are ever-more imperative to guide prevention strategies.

The four presentations thus rely on various theoretical approaches (e.g., posttraumatic growth, ecological), to examine coping, protective factors, resilience, and strengths in vulnerable youth and young adults from different contexts, including the pandemic, residential care, and youth detention.

The following symposium thus invites us to move beyond the looking glass of adversity to consider hardships as opportunities for growth.
