Dr. Lucía Zumárraga Astorqui is a pediatric clinical neuropsychologist and founder and director of NeuroPed, a leading center for pediatric neurodevelopment in Madrid, with more than 40 professionals working under a child- and family-centered model. She has over twenty years of experience in the neuropsychological assessment and intervention of children and adolescents with acquired brain injury and neurodevelopmental disorders, including prematurity, rare diseases, intellectual disability, ADHD, ASD, and giftedness.
She is co-author of the ENFEN (Evaluation of Executive Functions in Children, TEA Ediciones, 2009), a standardized battery widely used in Spanish-speaking clinical settings, and has taken part as co-researcher in numerous national and European cognitive tele-rehabilitation projects. She combines her clinical work with extensive teaching in master’s and postgraduate neuropsychology programs at several Spanish universities, including UCM, UNED, and Universidad Camilo José Cela.
She currently serves as vice-president of the Spanish Federation of Neuropsychology Associations (FANPSE) and president of the Madrid Neuropsychology Association (AMNP), having also chaired the organizing committee of several FANPSE National Congresses.
Differential diagnosis of ASD in adolescent girls: the role of internalizing symptomatology and migratory and cultural factors in three clinical cases with comprehensive neuropsychological assessment
The differential diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in adolescent girls constitutes a clinical challenge due to the frequent presence of internalizing symptomatology and the influence of cultural and migratory factors. This panel session aims to reflect on this diagnostic complexity by combining recent scientific evidence with insights drawn from three cases compatible with a diagnosis of ASD, assessed through comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation at NeuroPed (Madrid).
The panel will be coordinated by Lucía Zumárraga, neuropsychologist and director of NeuroPed. It will begin with a literature review on the phenotypic particularities of ASD in adolescent girls, its comorbid psychopathology, and the influence of cultural and migratory factors, presented by Iciar Iturmendi, neuropsychologist at NeuroPed and PhD candidate at the University of Toronto.
Following this, Marta Bolullo, coordinator of the Learning Enhancement Unit, will present the case of a 16-year-old adolescent, daughter of a Dutch father and Brazilian mother, resident in Spain for four years and assessed in English, with a history of mood disturbances, self-harm, and suicide attempts. Iria Meléndez, coordinator of the Clinical Psychology area, will present the case of a 14-year-old Peruvian adolescent schooled in English in Madrid with social difficulties, significant psychological distress, and trichophagia behaviors. Finally, Irene Araujo, coordinator of the ASD area, will present the case of twin sisters with a Russian mother and Spanish father, schooled in Spain, referred for depressive symptomatology, irritability, difficulties.
