PREVENTION AND PROMOTION OF MENTAL HEALTH IN SPORT: AN APPROACH THROUGH GROUP DYNAMICS
Sport during adolescence constitutes a privileged setting not only for physical development, but also as a key context for the promotion of mental health and the prevention of risk behaviors. However, the positive impact of sports practice is not automatic; it depends on the quality of group dynamics and the psychosocial environment. This symposium aims to explore how interpersonal processes within the team act as key mechanisms for promoting mental health and preventing risk behaviors in young athletes.
In this session, the results of a current line of research exploring the dynamics of adolescent sports teams are presented. Through several presentations, the symposium analyzes how interpersonal emotion regulation and the consolidation of group identity are related to emotional well-being. Likewise, the critical role of leadership in shaping relationships among team members is discussed. Findings highlight how these group factors are interconnected in promoting optimal levels of well-being and acting as protective factors in mental health promotion and the prevention of addictive behaviors.
Through a multidisciplinary and evidence-based approach, this symposium offers a comprehensive perspective on how optimizing group dynamics can transform the sports context into a relevant preventive setting for children and adolescents.
