Psychological Intervention and Family Variables in Chronic Illness in Children and Adolescents
Chronic illness in children and adolescents is a condition that affects not only physical health, but also emotional, social, academic, and family development. Although medical advances have improved quality of life, living with a long-term illness involves facing numerous difficulties—symptoms, treatments, social stigma, and disease consequences—that can affect different developmental stages. The impact transcends the diagnosed individual; families often experience high levels of stress and emotional burden, frequently requiring reorganization of daily dynamics, which in turn can influence the child’s adaptation and treatment adherence.
Currently, obesity is one of the chronic childhood illnesses with the highest prevalence. This monographic panel aims to present evidence on different intervention strategies focused on emotional regulation in children with obesity, highlight the importance of mindful eating-based interventions as a prevention strategy, and analyze the emotional burden on parents and its impact on quality of life in children and adolescents with chronic illness.
