Tools for Assessing Socioemotional Wellbeing in Childhood and Adolescence

The availability of psychometrically sound instruments is an essential condition for the rigorous assessment of socioemotional competencies and psychological processes associated with child and adolescent development. Obtaining valid and reliable evidence makes it possible to improve the quality of scientific research and provide a foundation for the design, implementation, and evaluation of educational interventions aimed at promoting wellbeing, psychosocial adaptation, and the integral development of students.

The primary aim of this symposium is to present various studies focused on the development and analysis of the psychometric properties of instruments designed to assess socioemotional competencies and related variables in children and adolescents. In particular, evidence will be presented on tools targeting constructs of growing relevance for development and education, such as mindfulness, interpersonal emotional management, family functioning, and gratitude.

The contributions included provide evidence relating to the internal structure of the instruments, their reliability, and different sources of validity, following current methodological standards in psychological and educational assessment. Furthermore, the studies have been conducted with samples of children and adolescents from different educational contexts, contributing to expanding the repertoire of tools available for the rigorous assessment of socioemotional variables during these developmental stages.

Together, this symposium aims to highlight the importance of measurement quality in the study of socioemotional competencies, providing instruments with adequate empirical support that facilitate both the advancement of research and the evaluation of programmes and interventions aimed at promoting children’s and adolescents’ personal, social, and emotional development.
